2020 Domaine Dirler-Cade Alsace Pinot Noir

Appellation: Alsace

Terroir: Sandstone soils from the lieu-dit Bux and Schwarzberg located next to the Grand Cru Spiegel in Bergoltz. Some of the Pinot also comes from the Southern part with the lieu-dit Bollenberg also known as lieu-dit Effenberg (South, South-East facing) on unique Oolitique limetone. The combination of these terroir gives this Pinot Noir power and finesse.

Grapes: Pinot Noir (100%)

Farming: Organic & Biodymamic (certified)

Aromatics: Black cherries, black berries, elegant touch of oak and smoky character with oak spices from the ageing in barrels.

Palate: Powerful and fine Pinot Noir with a great balance and a good generosity with nothing to envy to his Burgundian cousin. This Alsatian Pinot Noir is one of the best we tasted from the region thanks to its depth and purity. Long charming finish.

About the wine: Work of the soil by ploughing to encourage deep roots for a better terroir expression. The vines that make this wine are in average 25 years old. Hand-picked, whole bunch pressing with a pneumatic press, fermentation with natural yeast in stainless steel tanks, maceration for 2 weeks with pumping over. Ageing on lees for 10 months including 40% in Stockinger 500L and 600L barrels and 60% in tanks.

When to drink: Drink now or in the next 8-10 years after vintage.

Service: 12 to 14 C degrees in Burgundy glass.

Food match: Pair with a roasted poultry like a quale, turkey or a duck magret with cherries.

Ian d’Agata: “A beautiful Pinot Noir, easily as good as a good village Burgundy. A lovely success!”
