  • Les Athletes du Vin | Loire | Mosaique Wines

LES ATHLETES DU VIN Loire Valley Sustainable and Organic farming “Les Athletes du Vin” is a collective of some of finest organic Loire Valley producers. Established in 2016, their objective is to make great value wines for wine lovers across the world, highlighting the appellations and grape varietals that contribute to the diversity and beauty of the Loire valley. Each of these producers have vineyards in all the corners of the Loire Valley region, they farm their vineyards and vinified each cuvee separately and collectively share the logistics and the sales of the wines. In true collective manner, they also share insights in to winemaking techniques, and seek feedback from each other on their wines. In fact, long lunches often accompany robust tastings - after all this is where their name comes from “Les Athletes du Vin”: the champion of the elbow rising (with moderation of course)! The ‘Athletes’ all share the same philosophy. Maximum care is taken with farming practices, which includes hand harvesting vines from 10 to 120 years old. In the winery, it’s all about minimal intervention, using natural yeast for fermentation, stainless steel, concrete and old oak along with minimum sulphur addition and light or no filtration depending of the cuvee. They aim to make delicious and real wine. What started as only 3 wines; a Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and a Pinot Noir is now a range of 15 wines including Touraine to Chinon, Grolleau and Pineau d’Aunis. Naturally, a group of dynamic winemakers were set on creating wine labels to reflect the spirit of their endeavours. And when the time came, only one name would do - Michel Tolmer. Who else than Tolmer, brilliant cartoon creator of ‘Mimi, Fifi et Glouglou’, and leading illustrator for the French “Natural Wine” movement. His style and imagination made him the perfect choice to capture each of the grapes and appellations of the Loire Valley. The collective of “Athletes” include: Gérald is based in Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil, where he makes AOC wines Cabernet Franc from Chinon and Saint Nicolas de Bourgueil. He also produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Pinot Noir from Touraine. Florent in the Saint-Pourçain area produces Chardonnay and Gamay, an area stylistically close to Beaujolais. Jean-Pierre in the Côte de Grand-Lieu in Muscadet area produces ‘Mumu-Chardonnay’, a blend of Melon de Bourgogne and Chardonnay. Antoine is based in Menetou-Salon and produces a Pinot Noir and a Sauvignon Blanc Sylvain makes the Coteaux du Layon Marius the Pouilly-Fumé Jean-François in Touraine makes the Pineau d’Aunis Nicolas the Saumur-Champigny Victor the Grolleau. Most of the single varietals wines are Vin de France or IGP Val de Loire, not that we care about what’s written on the bottle – it’s what’s inside the bottle that counts, and these wines are spectacular value! www.vinibegood.com Shop wines Quick View NV Les Athletes du Vin, Touraine sparkling Chenin Blanc Price $48.00 GST Included Quick View 2021 Les Athletes du Vin, Loire 'Chardonnay' white Out of stock Quick View 2022 Les Athletes du Vin, AOP Saumur Champigny 'Cabernet franc' Price $42.00 GST Included Quick View 2023 Les Athletes du Vin, Vin de France 'Chenin Blanc' Price $42.00 GST Included Load More

  • Domaine Vincent Gaudry | Sancerre | Mosaique Wines

Domaine Vincent Gaudry Sancerre, Loire Valley Biodynamic certified Vincent Gaudry lives in the tiny vintners' hamlet of Le Petit Chambre in Sury en Vaux, 3 kilometres from Sancerre. Sury en Vaux means “the smiling valley”, and it makes much sense when you reach this place. Vincent took over the vineyard from his family in 1993, introducing the start organic and biodynamic farming. In 2002, the vineyard was certified organic, before full biodynamic Demeter certification in 2004. Organic and Biodynamic were essential for two reasons: first for his health and then to respect his terroirs. As a true minimalist Vincent’s guiding principle is “Trust in Nature”. He makes wine in tune with the power of the elements, with a feeling of being profoundly connected to the land. Inspired by local vignerons of the past from the village, insiders considering Gaudry's wines to be the most authentic expression of Sancerre. Although biodynamics is one of his pillars, Vincent continues to push boundaries by mixing pragmatism and intuition to pioneer new methods, which has earned him a following. The 9 hectare vineyard is composed of limestone and marl, 90% planted with Sauvignon Blanc and 10% with Pinot Noir. The vineyard averages vines of 40 years of age, planted by massal selection from a plot of 90 year old vines of old Sauvignon varieties. It gives berries of different size and maturity, which Vincent believes brings complexity in his wines. The grapes are all hand harvested in small baskets. In the winery, Vincent remains a traditionalist, shying away from trends he looks for balance between both varietal and terroir. The wines are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks, with native yeasts to allow the terroir and varietal expression to shine through. The wines are then aged on lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered with the bottling date according to the lunar calendar. The result is precisely delineated wines with stony minerality, concentration, texture, weight, complexity and lengthy vibrant finish. Le Tournebride Sancerre This 30 years old vineyard is representative of the 3 Terroirs of Sancerre: the stony, rubble-like Kimmeridgian limestone (Caillottes) brings the aromatics, the clay-limestone or marl (Terres Blanches) brings the structure in the mouth and the flint (Silex) the length. The wines are vinified with natural yeast in stainless steel and oak. Each batch moves from one vessel to the other, before final blending and ageing on fine lees. The result is a wine with spice, texture and impressive length, with a mineral finish. Constellation du Scorpion Sancerre This wine is dedicated to the biodynamic memories of the elements and named for the scorpion sign, which is sharp like the Silex’s terroir where the vine are planted. The wine is vinified in oak, with time varying each year based on vintage conditions. Scorpion is best enjoyed after a few moments of air - after which it opens to a textured palate of almond, lime-flower and grapefruit. The mineral attack persists, with flint and earth flavours, grilled almond, dried pear, blood orange and apricot. The finish is saline, elegant, clean and long, with lingering white fruits. • Champagne Vincent Couche | Mosaique Wines

champagne vincent couche Côte des Bar, Champagne Biodynamic certified The South of Champagne has often been lost to the shining, bigger houses which dominate the north. But, if you game to venture just two hours south from Epernay, and only 1 hour from Chablis, you'll find the incredible wines of Côte des Bar. Here, fortune favours the brave, as the unique mineral style of its Champagne and the attitude of its winegrowers become equally enchanting. Once you go Bar, you never go back. It is here in the lesser-known and authentic "south" you'll find Vincent Couche - grower, vigneron, artisan. His mother passed on her passion and know-how to Vincent, who is nothing short of a true perfectionist. In the vineyard or the cellar, he aims for nothing less than excellence. Couche, quite simply put, is very intimate with his vineyard. He knows each vine, each plot of land, each slope, farming all 13 hectares biodynamically cross two terroirs: Buxeuil and Montguex. Buxeuil covers 10 hectares, with mostly Pinot Noir around the village where his cave is located, with steep slopes overlooking the Seine river. Soils are composed of limestone-clay and marl-clay according to each parcel, with high density to increase competition between the vines, resulting in berries with better maturity and flavour profile. His second terroir is in Montgueux Chardonnay kingdom, 48 min north-west near Troyes, with 3 hectares of Chardonnay on chalk dating back from the Cretaceous period. . Vincent continuously studies the needs of his vines, supplying the energy they need using only biodynamic treatments. His preparations include medicinal plant treatments, cow-horn manure, pulverisation of crystallised silica and natural compost. His aim through biodynamic farming is to express the richness and complexity of his land to its full potential. Harvest is strictly by hand, sorted directly in the vineyard, with only ripe and healthy berries reaching the cellar to be pressed. Alcoholic fermentation uses only natural yeast, followed by vinification with little or no sulphites in partial or full barrel. • Thierry Navarre | Mosaique Wines

DOMAINE Thierry Navarre Saint-Chinian, Languedoc Organic Two Star La Revue de Vin de France: “Amongst the elite of the area.” New York Times: "To Find the Best of Languedoc, Follow the Producer" 2019 Jancis Robinson: "Languedoc for terroir-driven bargains" 2004 The story of how Thierry Navarre came to be part of our Mosaique Wines offering is a long one, literally, but we’re so glad we persisted and can bring these wonderful wines to Australia. Thierry Navarre is a producer we have had in our mind for some years. We would check in every year to see if we might get a response but given he spends so much time in the vineyard, and not so much time in front of the phone or computer, it proved a difficult task. Finally, we saw a chance in March 2023 - Thierry would be at the La Dive a Bouteille Wine Fair, and so would Thomas on a flying trip to France. The trip was almost accounted for by the minute, and as the morning of the wine fair ticked by, Thierry was nowhere to be seen and Thomas needed to leave to go to another wine fair. Of course, just as Thomas was leaving, Thierry arrives already in deep conversation with someone else. Long story short, Thomas decides to be late (not a big drama for the French), and stay until he can finally meet Thierry - an encounter years in the making and instantly worth the wait. Thierry Navarre is a bit of an icon in his region of Languedoc. He is widely regarded as one of the most respected natural winemakers in the area, and his wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and terroir-driven flavours. Without question, Navarre is best known for continuing his family’s dedication to promoting diversity of grape varietals in the region, resurrecting lost and ancient grape varietals - most of which are lower in alcohol. Taking over from over the domaine's vineyards in 1988, Navarre is a man who lives in his vines - a patch of 15ha based in and around the picturesque village of Roquebrun (which incidentally is set to become a grand cru of Saint-Chinian). His vineyards are farmed organically and filled with a role call of both popular and yet to be discovered varieties including Œillades, Ribeyrenc, Syrah, Cinsault, Grenache noir, Carignan, Romorantin, Clairette, Grenache gris, Marsanne, Terret and Muscat à petit grains blanc. These vines have a southwest exposure, and combined with soils composed of loose brown schist, generally produce lighter, mineral driven, delicate, more elegant styles compared to the wines from further south in Saint-Chinian. His lower alcohol (11%) and brighter ‘Le Vin d’Oeillades’ (Cinsault’s cousin) and ‘Le Ribeyrenc’ are French sommelier favourites and considered a ‘best kept secret’. The grapes are hand harvested, with some fully or partially destemmed. Following a natural fermentation in cement tanks, some of the cuvees are vinified traditionally, while others are vinified with carbonic maceration. Ageing occurs in a mix of tanks, old 228 litre and 500 litre barrels and foudre for 12 months. The resulting wines are unfined, yet they are filtered and have low sulphur. Navarre’s intuition for winemaking and passion for history translate into wines sought out by true wine lovers, a discovery not to be missed that we couldn’t be more excited to share! • Domaine de Montbourgeau | Jura | Mosaique Wines

Domaine de Montbourgeau L'Etoile, Jura Organic, in-conversion The Domaine de Montbourgeau is situated in the southwestern area of the Jura ,more precisely in the village of L’Etoile - meaning 'star'. depending on who you ask, the name comes from either the fact that five hills are surrounding the village make the shape of a star or, because of the many fossils of ancient starfish that you can find in the soils of this appellation. Either way, it is one of the smallest in the Jura with only 52 hectares. The vineyard was planted in 1920, by Nicole Deriaux's grandfather, and has produced traditional Jura wines since. In 1956 Nicole’s father, Jean Gros, became the head of the family and taking his turn to develop the vineyard and the cellar. Then some thirty years later in 1986, it was finally time for Nicole to take part in the operation of the Domaine. Continuing the family tradition, she is now helped by her son Cesar. They Deriaux's are hard-working people, with their efforts reflected in bottle. The wines are precise, straightforward, and with superb intensity. The ten hectares of vines are composed primarily of Chardonnay and Savagnin, as well as some reds with a small planting of Trousseau and Poulsard. The vineyard is organically farmed, and the vinification is very traditional, respecting the ancient practices of this region. Nicole Deriaux through her natural approach to viticulture and winemaking aims to retain and fully express the purity of l'Etoile terroir. When harvest time comes, the grapes are pick by hands and then vinified in the cave underneath Deriaux's home. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks using strictly indigenous yeasts. Then all the wines are racked into a mix of old foudres, demi-muids and smaller barrels. The whites are matured in barrel; they are never racked; they are not topped off. The small quantity of wines produced is then bottled, with no fining and a light filtration. The L'Etoile signature style, crafted by talented Nicole Deriaux, are wines of unique purity and elegance that we are proud to import. "2012 Cuvee Speciale Chardonnay: One of those Jura producers that seems to get overlooked for the Instagrammable ones, and by virtue of that, leaves us, the righteous, opportunity to access the wines! Hurrah! Meanwhile, sustainable farming is the ticket here, as is 20 to 90 year old vines. It is chardonnay that matures for four years, on lees, under a yeast flor. And so fresh out of these bottles. Amazing." 96 points, Mike Bennie, The Wine Front . "2014 L’Etoile Chardonnay: from an old school-good school producer out of Jura. Often unsung, but the proof is in bottle, definitively. Rocketing up my ‘interest’ rankings. Beautiful white wines." 94 points Mike Bennie, The Wine Front . "2018 Poulsard: Organic producer that sits under the radar in Jura, but is firmly on mine now. It took me a while to get to these wines, but when I did they suddenly became very important in my Jura matrix... When poulsard is on, it is world beating. • Camin Larredya | Jurancon | Mosaique Wines

camin larredya Jurancon, South-West France Organic and biodynamic certified Jurançon near the city of Pau is a special place for many reasons. It’s simply one of the most beautiful French vineyards, with steep slopes and scenic landscape, including the towering, often snow-covered, Pyrenees in the background. Jurançon is a pocket-size appellation of about 1,000 hectares farmed by 100 producers. Producing only white wine, it is historically known for late-harvest sweet wine or 'moelleux'. However dry white Jurançon wine was recognised with a separate AOC in 1975, known as 'Jurançon sec'. Dry Jurançon can be among the best whites you'll ever taste, particularly in the hands of a legend like Didier Dagueneau who helped to put Jurançon on the map. Today Jean-Marc Grussaute from Camin Larredya is one of the leading force and gaining plenty of fans among the sommelier community in France. Jean-Marc and his mother run the show and farm 'their hill' together. The 9 hectares of vines and farm have been owned by the family since the early 1900s, with most of the current vines were planted in 1970s by Jean-Marc’s father. Organic farming has been the norm here from 2007 onwards, certified in 2010 and turning to biodynmaic farming in 2016. The vineyard is classically local in varietal plantings: 65% Petit Manseng, 27% Gros Manseng, 8% Petit Courbu and Camaralet. The vineyard sits at 300m altitude, with soils of silica-clay and subsoils of puddingstone. Precision is life here, every action serves the "purpose of the terroir and its continuity", according to Jean-Marc, who respects the soil’s health and its life. It's essential for him that the roots go deep to express the terroirs in the final wine. Jean-Marc works the soils, grow cereals or pulses in between the rows, and uses natural compost when needed. The singularity and honesty of his wines come from permanent attention. "La Part Davant", or oriental part is a Jurançon Sec blend of Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng and some Petit Courbu. Skin contact at first, the must ferments with natural yeast, moving with the temperature of the cellar and vitality of the fermentation. Then fermentation and ageing on lees for at least 8 months in barrels and foudres. Ageing takes place in barrel and foudres, with batonage to snap the lees back in suspension. The wine is then left to rest and evolve in the cool cellars. Intense on the nose, with beautiful notes of white peach, yeasty and toasty character. On the palate, it's all about the lively texture and fleshy white fruits as well as orange and citrus notes, with an elegant driven acidity and long mineral finish. • Domaine Marius Bielle | Mosaique Wines

DOMAINE MARIUS BIELLE Lalande-de-Pomerol, Bordeaux Organic The face of Bordeaux is changing. For a region so steeped in wine history, the pace is perhaps slower than other regions, however the Bordeaux our parents knew is quietly beginning to share the spotlight with a group of energised and talented new blood, including Damien Bielle of Domaine Marius Bielle. We met Damien around a table of laughter, pizzas and of course wine. This unique character was introduced to us by Olivier from Chateau Gombaude-Guillot, both young rising stars of Bordeaux who became fast friends. A passion for wine was an obvious shared connection, which has evolved into sharing a warehouse, however they also discovered a joint love of MMA fighting. Word is they’ve even fashioned a simple yet effective gym and a fighting ring in the warehouse! Domaine Marius Bielle was founded in the 1940s by Damien’s grandfather, the domaine’s namesake, in Lalande-de-Pomerol. In this area, a grape maligned in other wine growing regions is seen as the king. Here, Merlot rules them all. There are no blends, the wines are 100% Merlot, a ‘one terroir, one cepage’ approach championed by Burgundy. It is this approach that allows Damien to focus on making wines that highlight the nuances of this grape. Graduating as an agronomist engineer, he went onto oenology school in Bordeaux and then worked for some of the most prestigious producers in the world - Chateau Petrus (Pomerol) and Chateau Cheval Blanc (Saint Emilion Grand Cru Classe), before finally deciding to return to the family estate to create his own expression in 2020. The process starts on the famous Pomerol soils of sand and gravel, with 13 hectares of organically farmed vineyard (certified 2021). Weaved in between the oceans of surrounding vines, you’ll find the Domaine Marius Bielle ecosystem - breaking the monotony with trees, grass and flowers growing in the vineyard, freeing space to create orchards, vegetable gardens and allowing a few animals in the vines. When vintage rolls around, the grapes are handpicked and sorted, before maceration by infusion, and a slow natural fermentation with vinification occuring in stainless steel tanks. Like a painter in his workshop, it’s a moment of focus and presence - creating a sketch of the vintage. The ‘slow but steady’ ethos continues through to aging, using concrete tanks and amphoras to gently and softly raise his Merlot. Damien grew up in contact with les “vins d’avant”, an old school style of wine in the best of ways, those wines that took the time of aging in the cellar and then in bottles before being released. This has without doubt influenced his winemaking, insisting the wines reveal themselves in time, finding their complexity along the way and without the use of sulphur, filtering or fining. We are excited to be bringing these vibrant and contemporary wines to Australia. It’s Damien’s wish that these Bordeaux wines that are opened at tables filled with laughter and good friends, enjoyed with some quality meat on the barbecue, not to be intimidating and tasted in suits and silence. He wants his wines to bring conversation. Having tasted his line up and a range of spectacular back vintages, we’re sure they will. • Chateau des Rontets | Pouilly Fuissé | Mosaique Wines

CHATEAU DES RONTETS Pouilly-Fuissé, Burgundy Organic Home is where the vines are, as it turned out, for Claire Gazeau. After pursuing a life outside of wine, working in architecture in Milan and meeting her now husband doing so, the vines of Gazeau’s family vineyard in Pouilly-Fuissés eventually called her home. Thirty years later, Chateau des Rontets is producing its best wines yet. The estate was founded in the 1700s, taken over by Claire’s great-great-grandfather, François Varambon in the mid 1800s. The estate holds many treasured family memories, and upon moving there in 1995 Claire and her husband Fabio saw it as a wonderful place to raise a family of their own. It’s safe to say the 7.5 hectares of vines were not thriving when Claire and Fabio took the reins of the estate. From day one, the pair set upon farming organically to repair the health and biodiversity of the vines, and in 2005 attained their Ecocert organic certification. Organic farming, according to Claire and Fabio, is the best way for their vines to express the vocation of their place. Ploughing and the avoidance of chemical weeding allows the root system to absorb the mineral elements of the soil, exploring the unique layers of limestone and granite that come with straddling the Burgundy/Beaujolais divide. Above all, abolishing all synthetic chemical products allows Chateau des Rontets to respect the environment and the natural expressions of the living ecosystem, but also to preserve the health of their family, workers, neighbours and that of those who drink their wines. The main estate is situated on the top of the hill which closes the valley of Fuissé towards the south. Sitting at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level, the daily temperature range here is key to gradual ripening and the preservation of good acidity even in the warmest and earliest vintages. This is where the grapes producing the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvées Clos Varambon and Les Birbettes are grown. The bedrock is composed of hard limestone from the Jurassic period, with layers of silt and silty clay, and a high presence of stones and silica. These characteristics guarantee very good drainage and the development of the roots, which can burrow down between the stones, following their cracks. There are 5.5 hectares of vines within the Clos, planted on a light slope increasing gradually as it approaches the woods separating them from the village of Fuissé. Just 500m south of the Clos sits the revered Pierrefolle (or crazy stone) vineyard, producing the Pouilly-Fuissé cuvée of the same name. Although situated so closely, and at the same altitude, wines from Pierrefolle are completely different from their brethren. Being further south, the bedrock here is granitic, the soil is much deeper and composed only of quite thick silts. Its eastern exposure provides shelter from the north wind and tends to be slightly warmer, leading to a more rapid ripening process and less acid in the grapes. When it comes to vintage, all grapes are hand harvested, then, in the winery, Claire and Fabio continue to let their wines take a relatively uninterrupted course. Alcoholic fermentations are made only with natural yeasts, without any addition of sugar or acid and without enzymes, and the malolactic fermentations are never inhibited or artificially stopped. This practice can lead to long fermentations, often lasting several months, increasing the aromatic complexity of the wines and amplifying their expression of place. One part of the winemaking journey that is especially important at Chateau des Rontets is the extended lees ageing. Lees have a fundamental role in the specificity and texture of these wines, as the team chooses to let the wines sit on lees, without stirring, to take maximum advantage of the autolysis while limiting the tendency of reduction and ensuring the extraction of glycerol. Lastly, there is no fining or filtering of the wines. Instead, to help the wines settle before bottling, ageing in barrels takes place across two winters - a rare, yet effective approach. • Domaine Landron Chartier | Muscadet | Mosaique Wines

DOMAINE LANDRON CHARTIER Muscadet Organic certified What’s the first grape varietal that comes to mind when we say Loire Valley? We bet its Sauvignon Blanc – which is delicious. However, there’s more to discover in this region. Domaine Landron Chartier is a wonderful example of a small producer continuing to work with lesser known grapes which equally represent the terroir of the Loire. Third-generation winemaker Bernard Landron initially began his career alongside with his brother Jo in the heart of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine area. In 2002 Bernard moved to Ancenis in the village of St Géréon, about 35 min drive from Nantes, and was joined by his eldest son Benoît in 2008. Benoît had returned to the family vineyard after completing his degree in viticulture and oenology, facilitating a conversation to organic practices in 2009. The family now farm around 25 hectares, with a patchwork of vineyards mostly situated around the towns of Ligne and Udon planted with a mix of Melon de Bourgogne, Folle Blanche, Pinot Gris, Gamay and Cabernet Franc. The decomposed volcanic material in the soils, along with a moderate climate and ocean winds to reduce humidity, results in a hallmark freshness to the wines. To ensure both the terroir and fruit purity are front and centre, extreme care during the winemaking process is followed – from the vineyard through to the cellar. Vines nurtured with organic farming practices are hand harvested and vinified separately based on terroir with a natural yeast fermentation. There’s minimal intervention in the cellar, with light to no filtration and low to no sulphur added depending the cuvees. The result is spectacularly pure and vibrant Muscadet, both at an entry level and at a precise, complex cru level. Expect textural, generous notes of fresh quince and white peach pinned together by a terroir driven acidity that will leave you begging for another glass. www.landronchartier.fr Shop wines Quick View 2022 Domaine Landron Chartier, ‘Pinot Gris Aussi’ Maceration Price $49.00 GST Included Quick View 2019 Domaine Landron Chartier, AOC Muscadet Cru ‘Le Bois Mouchet’ Price $85.00 GST Included Quick View 2019 Domaine Landron Chartier, AOC Muscadet Cru ‘Le Ponceau’ Price $85.00 GST Included Quick View 2019 Domaine Landron Chartier, AOC Muscadet Cru ‘La Grande Ouche’ Price $85.00 GST Included Load More
